A lifelong Ames resident and second-generation Ames High graduate, it was only natural that Katie go to college in her hometown. After college, she served homeless youth in downtown Des Moines as an Emergency Bed and Street Outreach Youth Advocate at Iowa Homeless Youth Centers, a division of YSS. Her passion for client advocacy led her to law school at the University of Minnesota, where she focused on public defense and mediation. After a brief stint as the Housing Program Coordinator at Mediation and Restorative Services of Anoka County, Katie served as Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Thomas A. Gilligan, Jr. Together, Judge Gilligan and Katie worked on hundreds of cases, including two murder jury trials, numerous civil jury and bench trials, and a variety of high-profile government lawsuits relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After the birth of her first child and five years as a Minnesotan, Katie decided it was time to come home. She had the pleasure of joining what was then Newbrough Law Firm in December 2022. Katie focuses her practice on court-appointed criminal defense and juvenile court, civil litigation, and estate planning. She has a particular interest in contract law.

Katie lives in a veritable zoo just outside Ames with her spouse, toddler, two deaf dogs, and hairless cat. You will find Katie on the bike trail in the summer and knitting in the winter. She stays busy with houseplants, the vegetable garden, and aspires to create a native pollinator habitat outside her front door. When she can get away from the chaos, Katie enjoys camping, hiking, and backpacking with her family.
